The Maitland and Saugeen rivers are fairly large rivers with good flow and deep runs. When normal water levels are present a 12' - 14' 7 - 9wt rod with a skagit setup along with 10-12' tips of T8 through T14 are ideal to cover the different water flow situations you may find. When water levels are on the low side, an 11' 7wt or 8wt switch rod with either a matching compact skagit head with 10' poly tips or compact scandi head with a long tapered flouro leader and slightly weighted flies is an ideal set up.
Almost all spey fly patterns will work along Ontario's West Coast but a few of the "tried and true" consist of the purple egg sucking leech, olive variant sculpins, natural coloured intruder type patterns, and some of the traditionals such as the lady caroline!
